A Great Egret surveys his domain, the cypress swamp in southern Louisiana. These beauties were hunted nearly to extinction for their plumes in the late nineteenth century, sparking conservation movements and some of the first laws to protect birds.

In this painting, full of rich greens and browns of nature with cypress knees rising from the dark, translucent water, the Great Egret is truly the king of the swamp, stately and regal.
